Jaipur packs an unusual amount of variety into a compact, walkable city — hilltop forts, a working royal palace, ornate temples, formal gardens, museums and some of India's most colourful bazaars, most of them a short drive from one another. Whether you have a single day or a relaxed week, this page helps you decide where to go and why.

Famous attractions. If you see only a handful of sights, make them the classics: Amer Fort with its mirrored halls, the City Palace where the royal family still lives, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal, and the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar. With Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts on the ridge above town, these form the backbone of almost every Jaipur trip.

Historical places. Beyond the headline forts lies quieter heritage — the royal cenotaphs at Gaitor and Maharani ki Chhatri, the stepwell of Panna Meena ka Kund near Amer, and the ornamental Patrika Gate. Browse them all under historical places.

Temples. Jaipur is a major pilgrimage centre. Govind Dev Ji inside the City Palace complex draws large aarti crowds, the marble Birla Mandir glows at dusk, and Galtaji — the "Monkey Temple" — sits in a dramatic hillside gorge. See more under temples.

Gardens & museums. For a break from sightseeing, the terraced Sisodia Rani Garden, Central Park and Kanak Vrindavan offer shade and space (see gardens & parks). On a hot afternoon, museums like the grand Albert Hall, the Amrapali jewellery museum and the Museum of Legacies are ideal.

Family attractions. Travelling with children? The Nahargarh Biological Park, the city zoo, the Wax Museum at Nahargarh and an evening at Chokhi Dhani ethnic village all go down well with families.

First-time visitors should start with the "golden circuit" of the old city — City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are walkable together — then add Amer Fort. Short on time? A well-planned one-day itinerary covers Amer plus the old-city landmarks; two or three days let you add temples, gardens and shopping without rushing.

How to choose. Group sights by area so you're not criss-crossing the city — the old-city monuments cluster together, while Amer, Jaigarh and Nahargarh sit on the northern hills.
