Events in Jaipur

Few Indian cities celebrate as vividly as Jaipur. The Pink City's calendar is packed with religious festivals, royal-era traditions and modern cultural events, and timing your trip around one can turn a good visit into an unforgettable one. Here's what to expect through the year.

Major annual festivals. Jaipur's biggest celebrations follow the Hindu calendar. Teej (monsoon) and Gangaur (spring) are colourful festivals with grand processions from the City Palace. Makar Sankranti in January fills the sky with kites, Holi brings a riot of colour, and during Diwali the markets and monuments glow with lights — the Pink City is spectacular. Autumn's Navratri and Dussehra and the monsoon's Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi are marked with devotion at temples across the city.

Cultural events. Jaipur also hosts world-class cultural gatherings. The Jaipur Literature Festival each January is one of the world's largest free literary events and draws visitors from across the globe. The Elephant Festival around Holi, kite festivals and craft fairs add to the mix, and the famous Pushkar Camel Fair — a few hours away — is a bucket-list experience in November.

Religious festivals. Temple celebrations run throughout the year, from special aartis at Govind Dev Ji to festival days at Birla Mandir, Moti Dungri and Galtaji. These are wonderful to witness but can be very crowded, so arrive early and dress modestly.

When Jaipur is busiest. The peak season runs October to March, when the weather is pleasant and the festival calendar is full. The city is especially crowded during Diwali, the Jaipur Literature Festival and the winter wedding season, when hotels fill and rates rise. For quieter sightseeing, choose shoulder months or weekdays.

What to expect & planning tips. Festivals mean colour, music, processions and crowds — but also road closures, busy temples and higher accommodation prices, with some shops closed on major holidays.
