About Amer Fort

Introduction

Amer Fort (also spelt Amber Fort) is Jaipur's grandest monument — a sprawling hilltop palace of pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble, overlooking Maota Lake about 11 km north of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, it is the single most-visited attraction in Jaipur.

History

Amer was the capital of the Kachhwaha rulers before Jaipur was founded. The fort-palace as seen today was begun by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and expanded by later rulers, most notably Sawai Jai Singh II. It blends Rajput and Mughal styles across a series of grand courtyards and palaces built into the hillside.

Why visit

Highlights include the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), whose walls glitter with countless tiny mirrors; the ornate Ganesh Pol gateway; the pillared Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas; and the cool Sukh Niwas. The ramparts and courtyards offer superb views over the lake and the surrounding Aravalli hills, and the whole complex connects to Jaigarh Fort above by a covered passage.

Best time to visit

Start early to beat both the crowds and the midday heat — mornings are cooler and the light on the sandstone is beautiful. The evening light-and-sound show brings the fort's history to life. October to March is the ideal season.

How to reach

Amer is about 11 km from central Jaipur on the Amer Road. Autos, taxis and app cabs run there easily; local buses also serve Amer town. From the base you can walk up the ramp to the main gate or take a jeep. Combine your visit with nearby Jaigarh Fort, Jal Mahal and Panna Meena ka Kund.

Photography tips

The reflection of the fort in Maota Lake from the road below is a classic shot, best in the morning. Inside, the Sheesh Mahal and Ganesh Pol are the most rewarding subjects.
