Nahargarh Fort

Fort on the Aravalli ridge

About Nahargarh Fort

Introduction

Nahargarh Fort stands on the Aravalli ridge overlooking Jaipur, best known for its sweeping views over the whole city — especially at sunset. Together with Amer and Jaigarh, it once formed a strong defensive ring around the old capital.

History

Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and later extended, Nahargarh — "abode of tigers" — served as a retreat and a defensive outpost. Its best-known building is Madhavendra Bhawan, a cluster of identical suites built for the king and his queens, linked by corridors.

Why visit

The main draw is the panorama: from the ramparts and the rooftop café the entire Pink City spreads out below, glowing at dusk. The fort also houses a wax museum and a stepwell, and the drive up through Nahargarh Biological Park is scenic in itself.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon into sunset is magical, as the city lights begin to twinkle below — arrive with time to settle in at the café. Winter evenings are cool, so carry a light layer.

How to reach

Nahargarh is reached by a winding hill road; taxis and app cabs are the easiest option, and the drive takes around 30–40 minutes from the city centre. It can be combined with Jaigarh and Amer for a full day of forts.

Photography tips

Sunset over the city from the ramparts is the signature shot. The symmetrical courtyards of Madhavendra Bhawan also photograph beautifully.
