City Palace

Introduction

The City Palace is the ceremonial and residential heart of Jaipur's royal family, a vast complex of courtyards, gardens and museum galleries in the centre of the old city. Part of it is still the private residence of the erstwhile royals, while the rest is open to visitors.

History

Construction began under Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II soon after he founded Jaipur in 1727, with additions by successive rulers. The palace is a refined blend of Rajput, Mughal and European architectural styles, laid out according to the same grid principles that shaped the planned city around it.

Why visit

Don't miss the Mubarak Mahal and its textile and costume displays, the striking Pritam Niwas Chowk with its four seasonally themed peacock doorways, the grand Diwan-i-Khas housing two enormous silver urns, and the armoury. The complex also contains the revered Govind Dev Ji temple, and Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are right next door.

Best time to visit

Mornings are cooler and quieter. The palace is beautifully maintained year-round; October to March is the pleasant season for combining it with the surrounding old-city sights.

How to reach

The City Palace is in the middle of the walled city, a short walk from Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar. The nearest metro stops are Badi Chaupar and Choti Chaupar; autos and cabs reach the entrance easily.

Photography tips

The peacock doorways of Pritam Niwas Chowk are the most photographed feature — early light and fewer crowds make for the best images.
