Jaipur's heritage is among the richest in India. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, it was one of the country's first planned cities — laid out on a grid of wide streets and neat market squares according to ancient principles of design. The city earned its "Pink City" nickname when its buildings were painted terracotta pink to welcome a royal visitor in 1876, and in 2019 the walled city was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

That history is written into its architecture: the hilltop forts of Amer, Jaigarh and Nahargarh; the working royal City Palace; the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar; and the honeycomb façade of Hawa Mahal. Beyond the monuments, Jaipur is a living centre of craft — blue pottery, hand block-printing, meenakari enamelwork and Kundan jewellery are still made in its workshops and bazaars.

The city's culture is best understood in motion. Festivals such as Teej, Gangaur and Diwali fill the streets with processions and lights; folk musicians and dancers keep centuries-old traditions alive; and the aromas of dal baati churma and ghewar drift from its kitchens.
