About Jaigarh Fort
Introduction
Jaigarh Fort crowns the ridge directly above Amer, built to guard the palace below. Rugged and well preserved, it is best known for Jaivana — once the largest cannon on wheels in the world.
History
Raja Sawai Jai Singh II built Jaigarh in 1726 to protect Amer, to which it is linked by fortified passages. It served as a cannon foundry, an armoury and the royal treasury.
Why visit
See the giant Jaivana cannon, the historic foundry, the armoury and museum, ingenious water-harvesting tanks, and some of the finest views over Amer and the surrounding hills. Because it draws fewer crowds than Amer, it feels wonderfully uncluttered.
Best time & how to reach
Combine Jaigarh with Amer Fort — the two are connected, and a road also runs up to Jaigarh. Mornings are cooler and quieter.
