Jaipur Zoo is one of the older zoos in India, set within the historic Ram Niwas Garden in the heart of the city. Long a favourite family outing, it has evolved in recent years into a central bird park and remains an easy, enjoyable stop for visitors of all ages.
History
The zoo was established in 1877 during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II, as part of the grand plan for Ram Niwas Garden. For well over a century it housed a wide range of animals; more recently many of the larger animals have been moved to the more spacious Nahargarh Biological Park, and the site now focuses on birds.
What to see
Visitors can see a variety of resident and migratory birds, along with reptiles and smaller animals, amid the mature trees and shaded paths of the garden. Its central location and modest scale make it a relaxed, walkable outing rather than a full-day expedition.
Visiting tips
Because it sits within Ram Niwas Garden, the zoo combines perfectly with a visit to the adjacent Albert Hall Museum. Mornings are cooler and the birds more active. Entry is nominal.
