Sisodia Rani Garden is a romantic tiered garden set against the Aravalli hills on the Agra Road, a short drive east of Jaipur. With its cascading terraces, painted pavilions and rows of fountains, it is one of the loveliest of the old royal gardens and a popular spot for a peaceful outing.
History
The garden was built in 1728 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II for his queen, a princess of the Sisodia royal house of Udaipur — one of his consorts, for whom he created this private retreat away from the intrigues of the court. It became a favourite escape for the royal couple.
What to see
Designed in the Mughal charbagh tradition, the garden rises in a series of terraces linked by steps and fountains, with manicured lawns and flowering shrubs. The pavilions are decorated with murals depicting the legends of Radha and Krishna, along with hunting and court scenes. Water channels and fountains run through the centre, and the hillside setting gives it a serene, secluded feel.
Visiting tips
Visit in the morning or late afternoon for cooler weather and the best light. The garden pairs well with the nearby Vidyadhar Garden and the Galtaji temples, all on the eastern edge of the city.
