Jantar Mantar Completed

The astronomer-king completes his grandest observatory.
A devoted astronomer, Jai Singh II built five observatories across northern India; the grandest stands in Jaipur. Completed in 1734, the Jantar Mantar houses nineteen monumental masonry instruments designed to measure time, track celestial bodies and predict eclipses.
Its greatest instrument, the Vrihat Samrat Yantra, is the world's largest stone sundial, accurate to within two seconds. The observatory was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
