Landmarks & Museums

This gallery brings together some of Jaipur's most recognisable landmarks and its finest museums — the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar, the Indo-Saracenic Albert Hall Museum, the vividly painted Patrika Gate, and the floating Jal Mahal.

Historical significance. Jantar Mantar, built by Sawai Jai Singh II around 1734, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest of his stone observatories. Albert Hall, opened in 1887 and designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, is the oldest museum in Rajasthan and holds a rich collection of art, textiles, arms and antiquities.

Where they are. Jantar Mantar sits beside the City Palace in the old city; Albert Hall stands in Ram Niwas Garden to the south; Patrika Gate is at Jawahar Circle near the airport; and Jal Mahal floats in Man Sagar Lake on the Amer Road.

Best photography times. Albert Hall is stunning when floodlit at dusk; Patrika Gate is best photographed early morning before the crowds; and Jal Mahal's reflection in the lake is clearest and calmest at dawn.
