These photographs showcase Jaipur's green spaces — the ornamental gardens and parks that offer a calm counterpoint to its busy forts and bazaars. Featured are the terraced Sisodia Rani Garden, the lush Kanak Vrindavan valley near Amer, and the city's Central Park and Jawahar Circle.

Historical significance. Many of Jaipur's gardens were laid out by the royal family in the Mughal charbagh style, with symmetrical terraces, flowing water channels and painted pavilions. Sisodia Rani Garden was built in 1728 by Sawai Jai Singh II for his queen and is decorated with murals of Radha and Krishna.

Where they are. Sisodia Rani and Kanak Vrindavan lie along the Agra and Amer roads on the city's edge, close to Galtaji, while Central Park and the circular Jawahar Circle garden sit within the modern city.

Best photography times. Early morning and the golden hour before sunset bring the best light and the most pleasant temperatures. The fountains, flowers and greenery photograph beautifully in the weeks after the monsoon, when everything is at its greenest.
